Men of Earth:

 

We know that only a small minority vaguely senses the possibility that beings similar to you, coming from other stars in this Galaxy, are secretly among you.

 

We know that only an insignificant fraction of these people scattered across this planet know our identity as human beings coming from UMMO, and that, quite logically, the greater part of this group maintains a cautious reserve, doubting the reality of our origin.

 

Nothing has brought us to you but the interest of analysing your civilization and the geological characteristics of what we call OOYAGAA (PLANET EARTH), terrestrial biological structures and the psychology of society.

 

In the Earth year 1950 (March) we arrived at this OOYAA (COLD STAR). Some two years earlier (EARTH YEARS) we picked up a faint signal on a frequency of 413.44 megacycles which we were unable to decode. It had been emitted around the year 1934.

 

(We later identified the radio signal as having been emitted from a Norwegian ship off Newfoundland, in experiments carried out by scientists of that nationality aimed at using high frequencies in long-distance communications by ionospheric reflection. The signal was emitted between the 5th and 7th of February 1934).

 

This date is therefore historic in EARTH-UMMO relations. We have photocopies of the radiograms that were sent (obtained by our brothers in Germany, who travelled to Bergen for this purpose) and, of course, the recording of the Morse signals, which were unintelligible to us at the time, since our technicians believed it to be a binary numbering code (DOT = ZERO, DASH = ONE or vice versa). You will be astonished to learn that the duration of the fragment of radiogram picked up was 2.2 UIW (about 6.8 minutes), which was enough for our technicians to identify, on galactic coordinates, the position of the solar system; they then named the star from which that signal came GAA (SQUARE), since the graph obtained from the signal recalled the analytical equation that expresses the area of this geometric figure.

 

Only on reaching you were we able to verify that the name OOYAGAA (COLD STAR of the "SQUARE") was falsely evocative, since the nature of the message was not exactly mathematical.

 

This answers the question put by Mr. Theodore T. Polk of PITTSBURGH (U.S.A.) concerning the origin of our arrival on this planet.

 

Some of you, in our telephone conversations, insist on asking us to present ourselves officially to the governments of the planet. Mr. Pierre Palyssy of ORAN (Algeria) even suggests that we send our "FLYING DISCS" to exterminate the Chinese communist government.

 

Mr. Palissy will understand that, while remaining respectful in any case of his interesting initiative, we cannot fulfil his wishes, for various reasons which we set out for him:

 

In the first place, our OAWOOLEA UEUAA, or flying discs as you call them, cannot come here at our whim.

 

On the other hand, although we acknowledge that this terrestrial State is pursuing a somewhat aggressive political line, we are not so sure that it really constitutes an imminent threat to you. The Chinese people are at present going through a very interesting crisis which, if you were not politically polarized by certain prejudices, you would assess at its true level. Neither the Soviet Union nor the United States will allow the development of that nation to be steered towards a warlike objective.

 

In similar terms we reply to Josef Väry of BRNO - (CZECHOSLOVAKIA), who asks us whether we could use our weapons to overthrow the totalitarian regimes of Portugal, Spain and South Africa.

 

It is not our intention, then, to act as an international terrestrial police force. We repeat that our passive mission of study and analysis forbids it.

 

There are several reasons that lead us to remain hidden, and certainly fear of a possible aggressive reaction from the men of Earth is not among them. We repeat ad nauseam that we have no interest in being believed. Some of you keep telling us that we must present proof.

 

We still do not know what you naively mean by that. There are several technical ideas that we have placed within your reach, and despite everything the technicians who received them attributed them to eccentric scientists. Those people who demand to TOUCH such proofs with their hands do not realize that their stance is as intellectual as that of a peasant who doubted the reality of the LASER because he had never had one of these devices in his hands.

 

But we reiterate once again that we respect your incredulity. We work much better anonymously, and we are not going to be so naive as to present ourselves to you vaingloriously for the sole purpose of entertaining you.

 

You seem to forget that TESTIMONIES HAVE EXACTLY THE VALUE GRANTED TO THEM BY THE REASONING ON WHICH THEY REST. If you do not understand or you disdain the ideas we have offered you so far, YOU WILL DO WELL NOT TO BELIEVE US.
